EHSRC Pilot Grant Program - Guidelines for Application

Funding:

Applicants may apply to one of three programs:

1. Environmental health research program (Senior): Funds up to a maximum of $50,000 will be awarded directly to a senior investigator (or investigative team), for a 12-month period, for the purpose of establishing a new research direction in environmental health research. Use of EHSRC facilities documented by a letter from the facility director is required.

2. Environmental health research program (Open): Funds up to a maximum of $30,000 will be awarded directly to an investigator, for a 12-month period. Investigators are required to utilize the support of EHSRC facilities, and provide a letter of support from the facility director. Junior investigators (e.g. Assistant Professors) may apply. Interested Associates, Research Scientists, or Post-doctoral fellows may also apply with more senior faculty members. Senior investigators, who wish to move into new directions, or into new collaborations, within the environmental health sciences research area are also strongly encouraged to apply.

3. International environmental health research program: Funds up to $10,000 will be awarded directly to the investigator(s). Matching support for supplies and services provided by a EHSRC facility is required and must be documented by letter. Foreign travel expenses (up to $1,500) can be used for foreign collaborators to travel to or from study site. To the extent possible, the budget should be used to support research activities in the host country.

EHSRC Facilities:

Pulmonary Toxicology Facility (Dr. Peter Thorne, 319-335-4216)
Environmental Modeling and Exposure Assessment Facility (Dr. Patrick O'Shaughnessy, 319-335-4202)
Integrative Health Sciences Facility (Dr. Joel Kline, 319-353-8551)

EHSRC Research Clusters:

Oxidative Stress & Metabolism(Dr. Larry Oberley, 319-335-8015)
Inflammation and Innate Immunity(Dr. Joel Kline, 319-353-8551)
Environmental Lung Disease(Dr. James Merchant, 319-354-5452)
• Environmental Genomics Initiative (Dr. Jeffrey Murray, (319-335-6897)

Grant Applications in the form of 15 copies, double sided and stapled, should be delivered to Nancy Newkirk, 178 IREH, Oakdale Campus, by 12:00 noon on February 1, 2008. The format must adhere to the guidelines below.

Brief Descriptions of the EHSRC Facilities Cores:

The Environmental Modeling and Exposure Assessment Facility (EMEAF) facilitates the research efforts of Center investigators and pilot grant awardees by providing a variety of services and equipment needed to understand the relationship between contaminants found in rural environments and their impact on human health. The EMEAF offers a cost-effective instrumentation lending service, guidance on modeling and display of contaminants and affected populations, advice on initiating and conducting population-based studies, and expertise in measuring environmental contaminants. Consult Dr. Patrick O'Shaughnessy 335-4202 for additional information.

The Integrative Health Sciences Facility (IHSF) provides the infrastructure for training of young clinical/ translational investigators with an interest in environmental health science. THE IHSF provides guidance on recruiting human subjects and obtaining IRB approval for clinical and translational studies relevant to environmental health science; and, carries out acute human exposures to dry aerosols, gases, nebulized solutions and combined exposures. The Facility also controls, monitors, and quantifies exposures and environmental conditions throughout the studies; assesses and monitors pulmonary and systemic physiologic responses; obtains and processes biologic samples; assesses and quantifies radiographic manifestations of airway injury and response; and, develops registries and tissue banks of asthma patients and their environmental exposures. Consult Dr. Joel Kline 353-8551 for additional information.

The Pulmonary Toxicology Facility Core (PTF) provides the facilities and expertise for EHSRC investigators to enhance the productivity and quality of their pulmonary toxicology research and to assist them in exploring new investigative areas in asthma, pulmonary biology, inhalation toxicology, or aerosol science. In addition, investigators from NIEHS-funded Environmental Health Centers are supported with expertise and assays for evaluation of exposures to asthma triggers. Consult Dr. Peter Thorne 335-4216 for additional information.
