Dr. Mallampalli's research has focused on the regulatory mechanisms for CTP:phosphocholine cytidylyltransferase (CCT), the rate-limiting enzyme required for the de novo synthesis of phosphatidylcholine. Another area of investigation focuses on the mechanisms by which an important class of inflammatory mediators, the sphingolipids, repress CCT gene transcription. Dr. Mallampalli's group is studying the biochemical pathways by which sphingolipid degradation products are generated in the lung, and their effects on CCT transcriptional activity by molecular analysis of the CCT promoter and by using transgenic approaches.
