Director:
Co-Director:

R. William Field, Ph.D.
James A. Merchant, M.D.

The goal of the Environmental Lung Disease Research Cluster is to enhance epidemiologic, etiologic and clinical research related to the detection, ascertainment, intervention, surveillance, and etiology of environmental and agricultural airway diseases. Currently, core investigators are engaged in research on asthma and lung cancer (in particular those related to radon, environmental tobacco smoke, and diet) as well as exploring genetic polymorphisms related to environmental lung disease. Additional areas of study include hypersensitivity pneumonitis, chronic beryllium disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related disorders, and the role of aging in susceptibility to environmental lung disease.

Specific Aims

  • To understand how specific agricultural and environmental exposures contribute to airway diseases in humans,
  • To learn how host defense mechanisms (genetic and other) affect the manifestation and pathogenesis of agricultural and environmental airway disease, and
  • To provide research experiences and mentoring to health professionals, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
