Renewable Energy in the Midwest |
The health effects of large-scale livestock production has long been a concern of the EHSRC, and the Center remains involved in this issue on many levels, including the conduct of scientific and clinical research, research translation to the public, and public policy development. |
The Great Plains region, with its vast open lands and agricultural production, is particularly well suited to exploring resources such as large-scale wind farms, corn-based ethanol and other bio-based fuels. Renewable Energy is gaining ground as a viable economic and ecological pursuit in rural America. |

The Role of Endotoxin in Respiratory Disease
| Asthma and its environmental triggers continue as a major focus of EHSRC research. The incidence and prevalence of asthma in rural and agrictulrual populations and within the home environment are at the center of several ongoing studies. |
EHSRC Researchers have been at the forefront of efforts to identify pathways of inflammation and lung responsiveness to inhaled endotoxin and to understand the determinants of endotoxin responsiveness. |

An EHSRC summer program for high school students interested in learning about environmental health had a successful ten-year run from 1997-2006. |
Center investigators have played a leading role in assessing radon concentrations and their harmful health effects in Iowa and Minnesota through the Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study. |

Health Effects of Pesticides Among Rural Populations |
EHSRC investigators have been particularly interested in the effects of CpG DNA on the innate and acquired immune responses. |
The Agricultural Health Study is designed to explore potential causes of cancer and other diseases among farmers and their families and among commercial pesticide applicators. |
